🕊️ INTRO
Shalom, and grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome to The Notes I Leave podcast.
The Hebrew word “shalom” signifies more than mere peace; it signifies wholeness, completeness, well-being, harmony with God and others. All of which, I wish for you.
The purpose of this podcast is to share the diverse experiences I encounter as a professor, teacher, entrepreneur, student, father, son, brother, and follower of Christ Jesus. These notes are intended for you, now and in the future.

📖 MAIN MESSAGE
📜 This week’s theme:
In this episode, I discuss how the Lord has placed Charlie Kirk on many of our hearts.
📜 Anchor verse(s):
11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences. 12 We are not again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; 15 and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
2 Corinthians 5:11-15, New American Standard Bible, 1995
📜 Application or takeaway:
The Lord has placed on my heart the need for us to realize our contribution to the church (Ephesians 4:11).

🙏 TRANSITION TO MEMBERS
That is the heart of what the Lord laid on me this week—but for those of you walking this journey further with me, there is a deeper side I want to share; in the members-only section, I’ll be opening up about how this career change challenged me as a father and a disciple.
But first, I would like to leave you with a quote and question.
📚 Quote:
“It is the responsibility of the individual to protect their own freedom and secure their own happiness.”
—Charlie Kirk
☕️ Question:
What role do you play in Christ’s church?

Transcript
Shalom, Grace and Peace in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
-:My name is Daniel Miller and this is the Notes I Leave Podcast
-:Good morning, good afternoon, and Good evening, depending on which
-:time of this I have the pleasure of joining you in your walk today.
-:I pray that this is something that lands on you appropriately
-:led by the Spirit.
-:As the purpose of this podcast, the Notes I Leave is to follow
-:the Spirit is to be led by the Holy Spirit to provide what is
-:on my heart on a weekly basis that the Spirit puts on my heart
-:and and convinces me to convey.
-:This podcast is falling short if I'm not in the Word and I'm not
-:praying continually into what should be shared.
-:Because like in Matthew 6, storing our treasures in heaven, not on earth.
-:That is what we aim to do with this podcast and boy do we feel
-:it here on earth.
-:This podcast is by no means a success in terms of the way the
-:earth or the world would define a success.
-:But what it is is a success in how God is leading us in our lives
-:and therefore success in heaven.
-:And so while our audience may be small, we appreciate you.
-:While our audience might be small here on earth, it's very large
-:in heaven, I believe.
-:And that is worth celebrating and that is worth being excited
-:about, and that is worth continuing on on a weekly basis.
-:We know and trust that the Lord will provide for the expenses
-:we have with this podcast.
-:Thankfully, in this day and age, with some of the things that
-:we we have in this sort of normal walk as Americans, we already
-:have a lot of the tools that we need to publish this podcast and
-:we've been blessed with the extra finances to continue to do that.
-:And this is by no means a mention to stir up donations or to get
-:you to share this episode more frequently, it really isn't.
-:In fact, the reason for mentioning this along the same vein of
-:this title is to not be clickbait and to not be with the world,
-:but be aligned with God in heaven.
-:So even as I title this episode Charlie Kirk and 9 11, the purpose
-:of it isn't to have more hits or views because of the name Charlie
-:Kirk or 9 11.
-:It really is a few weeks delayed and when that would have been
-:most ideal to publish it merely for clicks.
-:But I wanted to conclude the three episode plan we have with Rapture
-:perspectives, Tribulation perspectives and Millennial perspectives.
-:And then the time feels and seems right in led by the Spirit to publish this.
-:Now I also don't want to not state something on this because in
-:the nature of this podcast is the Notes I Leave.
-:It is really something that whether we're able to use this right
-:away or we come back to it, and whether you are a former student,
-:I've had a current student, I've had my children who are little
-:now, that have grown up myself, watching this again, to remind
-:myself of what the events of this assassination attempt were like
-:or the events of my high school experience when 9, 11 occurred,
-:what that was like.
-:Regardless, that all fulfills a purpose and.
-:And it is a privilege to be able to keep this on the air, to meet
-:all of those needs as they arise.
-:And so what I'd like to do with the first half of this episode
-:is to speak to really the impact Charlie Kirk had on the generation
-:that I have the privilege of teaching at the high school, the
-:Christian high school that I'm at, share some of those experiences
-:that occurred on September 10th and September 11th as the students
-:heard this news, and I was able to, as their elder, as their teacher,
-:watch how it was affecting them differently than it was other
-:people of different generations, including mine.
-:And as a spoiler alert, I walked away from it really thinking
-:the best way that I could relate to them was my September 11, 2001 experience.
-:And so in the members only section, I'm going to share my experience
-:on that as a reflection.
-:So I hope you join me for both.
-:But let's get right into it.
-:And specifically, what we want to get into is God's Word.
-:And so I've actually picked a verse that was, as far as I can
-:tell, near and dear to Charlie Kirk and his family.
-:And so I'd like to read that to you now.
-:It's out of the second book of Corinthians, chapter 5, verses
-:11 through 15, and it reads as this.
-:Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we perceive, we persuade
-:men, but we are made manifest to God.
-:And I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciousness.
-:We are not again commending ourselves to you, but are giving you,
-:on occasion or an occasion to be proud of us, so that you will
-:have an answer for those who take pride in appearance, not in heart.
-:For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God.
-:If we are of sound mind, it is for you.
-:For the love of Christ controls us.
-:Having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died,
-:and he died for all, so that they who might live no longer live
-:for themselves, but for him who died and rose again on their behalf.
-:Beautiful set of verses.
-:Charlie was a wonderful example of what it means to be Christian.
-:He wasn't perfect, neither.
-:None of us are.
-:But it was amazing to see his evangelist skills come to the forefront constantly.
-:I feel like from my vantage point, which I'll keep brief because
-:I want to provide the students that I teach, their vantage point,
-:it seemed more political at the very top of the surface.
-:But if you watched his videos, I haven't found many where he didn't
-:present God's word and in a lot of instances present the gospel
-:in addition to what he was talking about that was political.
-:I feel blessed to have witnessed part of his memorial service
-:this last Sunday.
-:I wasn't able to go in person.
-:I live three, four states away.
-:But it was beautiful to see it cast online and how many people
-:showed up and how often the gospel was presented in each of the speakers.
-:So I'm thankful that I was able to witness some of that.
-:And as I've referenced many times, the men's group that I meet
-:with on Wednesday mornings, they were all very impacted by that
-:memorial service as well.
-:On September 10, I came in like no other day.
-:Similar to September 11, 2001, I came in like any other day, no
-:other day, and just, you know, business as usual.
-:Wednesdays at our high school is a chapel day.
-:And so we are in a little bit nicer dress.
-:We are having some shortened periods so we can have about an hour
-:in chapel and really looking forward to how God's going to work in that.
-:And so our lessons in class are abbreviated.
-:They're maybe 0.6, 60% of a normal class period.
-:And nothing was different up until about noon.
-:As you know, Charlie was shot in Utah, which is the same time
-:zone is where we're at in Idaho.
-:And so it was sometime a little closer to one than closer to noon
-:when I think the first person mentioned that something appears
-:to have happened.
-:And it was one of our history teachers that alerted the rest of
-:us that something had happened.
-:At our high school, we have a zero tolerance policy to cell phone
-:use on the students behalf and even the faculty.
-:We are more connected to the computers that we teach from than
-:we are our personal devices.
-:Those are largely put away, usually only there for emergency purposes.
-:The students weren't the first to hear this because they had their
-:phones put away in their lockers.
-:But it didn't take long for a teacher to mention something in
-:a class and the eagerness for students to be connected to verify
-:the truth or the non truth, it wasn't too much longer for us.
-:The first news that we got was that there was a shooting and that
-:there was an assassination attempt in. In Utah.
-:But we didn't have confirmation whether Charlie had been killed
-:or not until two, maybe three hours later.
-:And it was right about the time that school let out that that
-:news broke maybe 10, 15 minutes before
-:the end of our school period.
-:So the policy states that students at the end of school are able
-:to return to their locker and turn on their phone and take it
-:home with them.
-:We encourage them to leave it in their car or leave it at home,
-:which a lot do.
-:But many of them do bring it into their locker and leave it off
-:in their locker.
-:And the news, as you would expect, spread like wildfire.
-:And while my heart was heavy and I was saddened to hear that,
-:it was sort of a sadness that I would feel for anyone that was shot.
-:I'm sad to say that Charlie Kirk didn't have a special place in my heart.
-:But I also wasn't his target audience.
-:But I do teach his target audience.
-:And as I walked through the halls and saw one by one, them officially
-:know what had happened, I was incredibly discouraged and incredibly
-:heartbroken because of the empathy I have for them and what they
-:were going through in that very moment in time.
-:Also disgusted because someone had decided to release, perhaps
-:more than one person had decided to release very graphic footage
-:of a very personal event online.
-:And many students were able to get a hold of that.
-:And we as humans have a curiosity to look at that sort of stuff.
-:It's why scary movies exist and people watch them.
-:It's why if there's a wreck on the side of the freeway, that everyone
-:slows down to look at it slower than we need to slow down for safety purposes.
-:There's a weird curiosity, and I can absolutely relate in my previous
-:life, that curiosity.
-:But I knew pretty early on that I didn't want to be seen any of
-:this footage at all.
-:It's very personal to him and to his family.
-:I hate that it is available online for anyone to watch.
-:I hate that.
-:Likely it'll be something that his children will be able to watch one day.
-:I hope that his wife hasn't watched it, but it seems like just
-:about everybody has by this time.
-:It sounds like some of the videos have been pulled down, and I'm
-:thankful for that.
-:But for the kids at our school, the damage was done most.
-:I would say probably 80 to 90% of the kids have seen it and that
-:they saw it likely within the first few hours.
-:I remember crossing paths with our principal, and the first thing
-:he said is, did you hear and did you see it?
-:And I said, no, I don't think I want to see it.
-:And he says, I really regret that I saw it.
-:And he advised me not to watch it.
-:Shortly thereafter, right outside of my classroom, there were
-:some students that were racing to their phone to watch the footage.
-:They had heard the news, but then they'd heard that there was also footage.
-:And so they were racing to their phone to watch the footage.
-:And the volume was all the way up.
-:And I unfortunately heard the things that were going on in that.
-:Those last moments of his life.
-:And I asked the students to be more aware that people may not
-:want to hear that or to see that.
-:And have since had conversations with those students about that
-:and love them dearly.
-:They're younger students.
-:So again, it makes me sad that they had access to that.
-:And at their age I would not have had even the smallest inkling
-:to think about anything around my personal bubble, whether there
-:was somebody that was an earshot to hear something like that or
-:somebody over my shoulder that could see something like that.
-:So in that day I was very saddened and troubled.
-:I actually went to the college class I teach that night and it
-:was pretty much silent during the entire class.
-:They had a quiz to take, so it made it really easy.
-:But I contemplated maybe canceling class that night.
-:And students were super gracious and understanding and comforting about it.
-:Many of them were affected as well.
-:And we got through it the next day.
-:Our school dedicated about 30 minutes at the beginning of school
-:as sort of a worship service for Charlie and for any of the students
-:that needed that extra time to process.
-:We excused any absences that students needed to have to kind of
-:get through this rough period of time.
-:To the students credit, I don't recall any students that actually
-:missed, but many of the students were there at that worship service.
-:We then went back to classes as normal.
-:And I dedicated essentially the entire day to not only speaking
-:about Charlie Kirk, but listening to what they had to say about
-:Charlie Kirk in the times where there wasn't a whole lot that
-:they wanted to say.
-:I then turned it over to my 911 experience as the best way that
-:I could relate to them in that moment in time.
-:And I have some very graphic details of my 911 experience that
-:have not faded in my memory for 20 plus years.
-:I guess it'd be just over 24 years now.
-:So I was able to share that with a number of the students.
-:But more important than that, I was able to see the trouble and
-:pain on their face and these 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 year olds, what
-:he truly meant to them.
-:You know, there's a quote that has been on my heart tremendously
-:the last month or so, and it is present the gospel in all things
-:that you do, and when necessary, use words.
-:And I felt like that was accomplished that day, that there was
-:a lot of silence that most would define as awkward silence, but
-:from a sociology perspective, it wasn't awkward.
-:It was, it was rest, it was contemplation.
-:And I could see the emotions being processed through many, many
-:of the students.
-:A few of them took the opportunity to talk about what he meant
-:to them and a great deal more talked about how this was not a
-:time for them to shy away as Christians, but for them to rise
-:up and for them to best make him proud in a sense, and continue
-:walking towards Christ as Charlie did, and to continue proclaiming
-:the Gospel as he did.
-:And throughout that day, the biggest take home that I had takes
-:us to Ephesians 4:11.
-:In Ephesians 4:11, it talks about essentially the gifts and the
-:roles that each of us provide to the church.
-:And your translation will either list four or five of them and
-:the fourth one is sort of a combination with the fifth or separate,
-:depending on the translation.
-:And so in no particular order, the five possible translations.
-:And I'll mention the two that are combined as the last two last
-:to kind of connect that depending on your translation.
-:But we have apostles, we have prophets, we have evangelists, and
-:then we have shepherds or pastors, that just being a Greek word
-:in its translation.
-:Most Bibles, that's the only time the word pastors is mentioned.
-:I totally shouldn't say most Bibles.
-:I should say most literal translations of God's word.
-:That's the only instance where we have the word pastors appear
-:in the Bible.
-:It's more commonly reference to shepherd.
-:And so but either or shepherd or pastor for that fourth one.
-:And sometimes that's combined with a fifth teacher.
-:So some translations will say apostles, prophets, evangelists
-:and teachers, pastors, and some will mention them all as separate
-:as five different categories as opposed to four different categories.
-:I wouldn't say I have 100% conviction that teacher, pastor is
-:separate, but I can provide separate definitions for them.
-:And I do see how they could be separate roles within the church.
-:I bring this up because to me it's quite clear that Charlie was
-:an evangelist and potentially even an apostle.
-:Apostle is something that's debated.
-:So some say that there was an apostle age and the apostles or
-:the twelve disciples of Christ that went and set out along with
-:Paul to establish the church and everyone that helped them, they
-:were apostles and that was the apostle age.
-:I don't know that I agree with that.
-:But as it stands, there isn't too much of a distinction between
-:an apostle and an evangelist, other than it appears that an apostle
-:is one who more sort of paves the way, founds the church, plants the church.
-:So could that be a pastor that does that? Absolutely.
-:A lot of times that it is.
-:And in these five roles, four or five roles of the church and
-:for the church's benefit, there isn't necessarily one that is only you.
-:A lot of times we are split into other categories.
-:And so again, I would say Charlie was probably an evangelist. Apostle.
-:An evangelist is going to proclaim the word, he's going to share
-:the good news to all that they encounter.
-:And Charlie certainly did that prophets are going to be sort of
-:the lips for the Lord.
-:There's a lot of controversy in that, and I won't take this time
-:in this podcast to cover that, but there's a lot of controversy
-:on whether the prophet age is, is over, whether that still continues.
-:There's even some thoughts as a sort of a weigh in testing period
-:is the current version of a prophetic period, if that is to exist today.
-:But nevertheless, a prophet is the one who is.
-:Their lips are used by God to transfer messages.
-:I think that also visions fall into that and then dreams and all
-:sorts of other things fall into that for those specific, specific people.
-:I personally have a lot of experience in that with dreams and,
-:and I would call them dreams slash visions, those sorts of things.
-:And then we have the, the teachers and then the pastors and the
-:teachers I really see as sort of like an elder board of churches
-:that really disciple people one on one in extreme depth to teach
-:sound doctrine to them and teach them how to have a relationship
-:with Christ over time.
-:And then the pastors are sort of the shepherds of the flock, if
-:you will, of that specific church.
-:And I very purposefully don't use the word head of the church
-:because that's Christ and all churches are under his headship, his kingship.
-:And so those five roles I see as equal roles, again, whether you
-:count them as four or five.
-:And what I, what I'm bringing this up in maybe too much detail
-:on is what I shared with the kids is that it was very clear that
-:Charlie was an evangelist and potentially also an apostle.
-:That doesn't mean that we all have to be an evangelist, that we
-:all have to be an apostle.
-:What it does mean is that we need to pray into the Lord, that
-:we need to find out what our talents and gifts.
-:Gifts are, and that we need to be open to using those talents
-:and gifts for his glory, for his church, in the way that he sees fit.
-:And so with that, for me personally, I see myself almost exclusively
-:as a teacher.
-:And I do my best on a daily basis to honor him in my teachings
-:and what I do.
-:And really, they aren't my teachings, they're his teachings that
-:pass through me, even those that come from the scientific realm.
-:I wouldn't know that information if it wasn't for him.
-:But for students to really dig deep in prayer on which of those
-:five or combination of five that they are, and to understand that
-:Charlie didn't have a better seat in heaven or doesn't have a
-:better seat in heaven because of how wonderful he was here on
-:Earth, and that our journey and our service isn't going to look
-:the same as his, more than likely.
-:And we're not going to have the accomplishments that he did, especially
-:by 31 years old.
-:But that's okay because our story looks different and our accomplishments
-:are going to look different in our public image, if there is any,
-:is going to look different.
-:We're not all meant to have the following that he did here on
-:Earth, but we are all meant to impact those that are in our circle,
-:those that we come across in a beautiful way.
-:I'll just give you a closing little example here, a little story,
-:if you will.
-:I was at a co op here in my local area, and I've gone there quite a bit.
-:And they're a little on the expensive side, but they've got good
-:quality stuff and I enjoy going there. And.
-:And mainly what I get there is chicken feed for the chickens that we have.
-:And they had a credit card processing issue for the last four, four days.
-:And so basically they were only able to accept cash.
-:When I was in line, the woman in front of me tried like three
-:cards and it kept getting declined.
-:And I said, don't worry about it, I've got it.
-:And she refused it.
-:It was like $50.
-:She said, that's way too much.
-:No, thank you.
-:Thank you for saying that, but no thank you.
-:And she went and left to go find her husband who had her wallet
-:in the parking lot. And they.
-:She thought she had enough cash to cover it.
-:And so then I come up and I had kind of interpreted the trouble
-:she was having as potentially maybe insufficient funds or something like that.
-:And it wasn't it was a credit card processing, a debit card processing issue.
-:And all my stuff got declined as well.
-:And so I asked the.
-:The clerk what they recommended.
-:And basically it was, go get cash.
-:That's our only option at this point.
-:And so I said, you know, thanked him for their time and left the
-:goods there and. And left.
-:And I decided that I was going to go to another store that was
-:a little closer to home.
-:I'd been meaning to try that store out, and so I did that.
-:But before I went there, I went to a drive through to get a smoothie
-:and some pretzels and those sorts of things.
-:And I pulled behind this vehicle and I noticed on the back of
-:the vehicle it stated that in basically a suicide defense that
-:you are of value and please do not take your life today.
-:You are loved.
-:The world is better for you.
-:And just a really moving statement on the back of this vehicle
-:that was in sticker form that had been put on there for probably some time.
-:And I've gone through suicidal thoughts at least twice in my life,
-:Serious, serious thoughts twice in my life, non serious, many
-:other times in my life.
-:And so I have a heart for that.
-:And then as I came around the corner and was directly behind them
-:as they were at the pay window, I noticed a church that they go
-:to, the sticker there and a license plate frame that said something
-:along the lines of Blessings from God.
-:And at that moment I was just really touched.
-:And so I actually stopped, opened my vehicle in the middle of
-:a drive through, which is kind of strange, but I got up and I
-:went to the passenger side and I waved at them through the passenger
-:window, which is also kind of strange in a drive through.
-:And they opened up their window and I just said, would you allow
-:me to pay for your meal, please?
-:And she instantly, this younger girl in the driver's seat almost
-:instantly started sobbing and kind of looked at me like, why would
-:you do that?
-:And I said, I'm really touched by the note that you have on the
-:back of the vehicle and, and all that.
-:And I didn't go into detail at all about my experience, but she
-:got more emotional and she said, this is actually my mom's car
-:and she is an advocate for people struggling with suicide and
-:has put that on the back of her car with.
-:With a phone number because of me, because of the young girl sitting
-:in the driver's seat that she had gone through suicidal periods.
-:And she even.
-:She showed me her wrist and she said, I even have this tattoo
-:to kind of Prove it.
-:And it was a semicolon, and I totally didn't understand the significance.
-:And so I asked her to explain it, and she said, well, in writing,
-:when you haven't fully concluded your thought in a sentence, you
-:use a semicolon to continue it into another sentence. Sentence.
-:And so in that way, the symbolism for me of the semicolon is that
-:my life story isn't complete yet and that I'm going to continue forward.
-:And for me, that was super powerful and super emotional.
-:And I was just so thankful that the Lord provided an opportunity
-:for me to awkwardly walk up to these people that I've never met
-:in my life, a vehicle that I've never seen before, and simply
-:pay for their meal and have a wonderful conversation.
-:She was so moved by it, she called her mom right there as I went
-:back to the vehicle.
-:And she shared with her mom the story that had just happened.
-:And they got their food, I pulled up, and I was able to pay for
-:both of the meals.
-:And so is that evangelism? Potentially? Partially.
-:You know, going back to that quote, in all things, you do present
-:the gospel and when necessary, use words.
-:I think that was accomplished today in that instance.
-:And it cost me $30 to do.
-:It was not something that was a big deal in terms of finances.
-:And I already have received far more than I could ever pay back
-:from that $30 or anything similar in just being a member of that
-:part of that story.
-:It was absolutely amazing.
-:And, you know, maybe it afforded her whatever or good story tonight
-:again when she sees her mom in person.
-:I don't know.
-:But I'm thankful that in that moment in time, I felt led by the
-:Spirit to do that and show my capacity to respond in the moment
-:in time in a teaching or evangelist or maybe even an apostle like fashion.
-:And so that was my point in sharing that today on the podcast,
-:as well as when I shared that with the students that I work with,
-:that we need to be ready and we need to honor Charlie's life because
-:he honored God, and we're honoring God in continuing Charlie's work.
-:We're not honoring Charlie as if he is any more than any of us.
-:He's a human being, a human being that's no longer with us. And we.
-:We believe is in the presence of the Lord, and.
-:And we honor the same king, Jesus Christ, the same king that he served.
-:We are to be aware of these five talents, these five gifts, and
-:we are to use them wisely and use them daily.
-:And so I encourage you to look at Ephesians 4:11.
-:If you haven't recently, or perhaps ever, and begin to identify
-:which of those roles you can best fulfill.
-:As a concluding quote, I would love to share one of Charlie's
-:quotes seems fitting to the episode and he states that it is the
-:responsibility of the individual to protect their own freedom
-:and secure their own happiness.
-:And he did that.
-:He did that, and we all should do that.
-:We're far too reliant on the government.
-:We're far too reliant on perhaps even the churches we attend to
-:do things for us.
-:But we're all responsible for our walk.
-:It's like an education.
-:Leave it to me to provide an education example.
-:But students are responsible for their own education.
-:It's not the teacher who's responsible.
-:The teacher needs to disseminate the information accurately, but
-:the education is the responsibility of the student and what they
-:make of the experience.
-:I learned that the hard way in college, and so I completely agree
-:with his quote.
-:And my question to conclude before we transition to this members
-:only segment is again Ephesians 4:11.
-:What role of those four or five in the church do you play?
